Former Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili has been found guilty of illegally crossing the border and sentenced to four years and six months in prison, Orda.kz reports, citing Tbilisi Life.
A Tbilisi court delivered its third verdict against Saakashvili, ruling that he unlawfully entered Georgia in the fall of 2021 when he secretly returned from Ukraine.
He was arrested shortly after his arrival, and a criminal case was opened, culminating in the March 17 ruling.
To find Mikheil Saakashvili guilty of committing a crime under Part One of Article 344 of the Criminal Code of Georgia and sentence him to imprisonment for a term of four years and six months, the court's verdict stated.
Saakashvili was not at the hearing, even remotely, due to health issues. He had requested the verdict be postponed until his recovery, but the court proceeded without his participation.
This marks Saakashvili’s second prison sentence in recent days. Last week, he was sentenced to nine years in a case related to embezzlement of state funds. Four criminal cases have been brought against the former Georgian leader, with one trial still ongoing.
