Lebanon has ended its presidential vacuum with the election of Army Commander Joseph Aoun as President, securing 99 votes from the 128-member parliament on January 9, reports Orda reports, citing Al Jazeera.

The election came on parliament's 13th attempt to choose a successor to former President Michel Aoun (no relation), whose term expired in October 2022.

The presidential election gained added urgency as Lebanon seeks international aid to rebuild areas damaged during recent clashes between Israel and Hezbollah.

According to Al Jazeera, Joseph Aoun's candidacy had backing from the United States and Saudi Arabia.

Deutsche Welle (DW) reports that the 61-year-old Aoun has led Lebanon's armed forces since March 2017.

Though he was due to step down from his military role last year, his term was extended twice due to the ongoing conflict.

He holds degrees in political science, focusing on international relations and military science. Under his leadership, Aoun notably managed to maintain the army's stability despite Lebanon's severe economic challenges.
