Kazatomprom: Sulfuric Acid Shortage Resolved
National company Kazatomprom announced that it had concluded a deal that will resolve issue with the shortage of sulfuric acid needed for uranium mining, Orda.kz reports.
According to the KASE website, Kazatomprom received approval for an offtake contract with KAP Logistics LLP and Taiqonyr Qyshqyl Zauyty LLP. This agreement should ensure the execution of the contract for the purchase of sulfuric acid for the needs of Kazatomprom in 2027-2043.
Taiqonyr Qyshqyl Zauyty LLP will supply sulfuric acid from a plant in the village of Taykonyr in the Turkestan region in the amount of up to 800 thousand tons annually, which will ensure an uninterrupted supply of uranium mining enterprises of the NAC Kazatomprom JSC group with a chemical reagent for uranium mining, the company reported.
Sulfuric acid is a key chemical compound in the leaching uranium mining process used by Kazatomprom.
The group of companies has been systematically short of it, which has directly affected production volumes. Back in 2023, Kazatomprom announced plans to build a new sulfuric acid plant in the Turkestan region, but this project is unlikely to be completed before 2026.
