Kazakh media, citing unnamed sources, have reported that an assistant to the military attaché from Kazakhstan’s embassy in Ukraine has been detained in Poland, Orda.kz reports.

We have requested comments from Kazakhstan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Ministry of Defense. There has been no official confirmation.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated it could not comment on behalf of the military and referred inquiries to the Ministry of Defense.

In early August, Polish authorities announced the detention of a foreign military intelligence officer from a post-Soviet Asian country, without naming the nation.

According to Poland’s Internal Security Agency (ABW), the individual had been working in Bydgoszcz and Warsaw as a career officer under diplomatic cover.

ABW said the suspect gathered information that posed a threat to Poland’s national security and the defense structures of allied countries. On August 1, 2025, the District Court of Warsaw ordered the suspect held in custody for three months.

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk stated that anyone endangering the country’s security “will be caught sooner or later.”

Kazakhstan and Poland have maintained diplomatic relations since 1992. Both have embassies in each other’s capitals, and cooperation extends to trade, cultural exchange, and parliamentary engagement. In 2023, bilateral trade turnover totaled $1.23 billion.

The countries also collaborate on educational initiatives and historical research projects, with the Intergovernmental Commission on Trade and Economic Cooperation serving as the primary economic dialogue platform.

Its most recent meeting was held in Warsaw in June 2023.
