January Events: One of Those Convicted in Storming of Presidential Residence Case Released

On October 16, Kosay Makhanbayev, convicted in the storming of the presidential residence and Almaty Akimat case, was released. His lawyer, Tolegen Berlikhodzha, informed Orda.kz about this.
Makhanbayev was initially sentenced to one year and nine months in prison, but an appeals court recently reduced that sentence by one month.
Mahanbayev is now at home with his family, said the lawyer.
The man was arrested during the January 2022 events, wounded, and taken to hospital. He was later taken from the hospital and brought to a pre-trial detention center in Almaty.
He had previously claimed that the police had tortured him. An investigation was launched into the incident, but the prosecutor's office closed the case in October 2022.
The sentences for the others implicated in the case remained unchanged. The court toughened the sentence for one of them, Aqjol Zhandarbekov, to eight years.
