Kazakhstani rapper Jah Khalib (Bakhtiyar Mamedov) is set to perform in Bishkek on November 29, but social media users are actively calling for the show to be cancelled, Orda.kz reports, citing 24.KG.
The backlash stems from comments Mamedov made on the ORTA podcast in April 2024, where he suggested that women could avoid sexual violence by dressing “modestly,” and implied that “improper” clothing contributes to sexual assault.
The remarks resurfaced online, sparking renewed anger, 24KG reports.
According to the outlet, criticism has been mounting since October. Among those speaking out is Almaty designer Saltanat Abdildayeva, who questioned why the rapper has not apologized:
Jah Khalib tried to hold concerts in Kazakhstan several times, but they were cancelled. Now he wants to perform in Kyrgyzstan, and people there want it cancelled too. The question is: why doesn’t he apologize and try to make amends? Or does he still believe he’s right? Is it really so hard to apologize?
Tickets for the Bishkek concert remain on sale, and the event has not been cancelled as of now.
