In East Kazakhstan, 13 streets are being renamed as part of a new decision approved by members of the local council, Orda.kz reports.
According to Ustinka LIVE, residents of Oskemen had for years called on authorities to honor legendary athletes — Olympic wrestling champion Zhaqsylyq Ushkempirov and celebrated hockey coach Boris Alexandrov. Their names will now officially appear on the city map.
The Republican Onomastic Commission endorsed the proposal earlier, and on December 9, deputies voted unanimously in favor.
The following streets will receive new names:
- Stakhanovskaya — Zhaqsylyq Ushkempirova
- Krasin — Boris Alexandrov
- Utepova — Oralkhan Bokei
- Krasnogvardeyskaya — Gerold Belger
- Karl Liebknecht — Boris Kerimbaev
- Kolkhoznaya — Asqartau
- Rosa Luxemburg — Arna
- State Farm — Orken
- Chapaeva — Berel
- Krasnodonskaya — Aray
- Krasnoflotskaya — Muztau
Renaming also extends to the village of Menovnoye:
- Sovkhozny Lane will become Talas, and M. Gorky Street will now be Talaptan Akhmetzhan
In Ridder, the Third residential area has been officially renamed the Tauelsіz microdistrict.
