Former banker, Jomart Yertayev, convicted of stealing 144 billion tenge from Bank RBK, has been returned to custody after his early release under an amnesty was overturned, Orda.kz reports.
Abzal Kuspan challenged the court’s decision to cancel the amnesty, and the prosecutor’s office backed his appeal. The court ultimately sided with the prosecutors, and the ex-banker will now remain in detention.
The court ruling against Yertayev has been overturned. I thank the Prosecutor General's Office of the Republic of Kazakhstan and the Almaty Regional Court, as well as the journalists who first raised this issue!

In November 2020, the former banker was found guilty of embezzling 144 billion tenge from Bank RBK between 2011 and 2017. He was sentenced to 11 years in prison, later reduced to nine on appeal.
In fall 2025, he was released under an amnesty, triggering public backlash.
The 53-year-old has long been associated with scandals in the banking sector, from Alliance Bank to Bank RBK.
His case involved 46 charges, 700 volumes of documents, and over 3,600 pages of indictment. He was tried alongside former Qazaq Banki shareholder Bakhyt Ibrahim, who died by suicide after his release.
