Bapi Slams Asset Recovery Efforts

Deputy Yermurat Bapi, a vocal critic of Old Kazakhstan, has once again urged the government to take more decisive action in reclaiming assets, Orda.kz reports.
According to Bapi, approximately two trillion tenge have been recovered so far, but this sum comes from only a handful of oligarchs.
There is information that over the past two years, about two trillion tenge have been returned under replenishing the treasury. Government agencies claim these funds are being used to build social infrastructure. But this raises certain questions. Only two or three companies returned these two trillion. Where are the rest of the assets that other oligarchs were supposed to return? Even the members of parliament who passed the law on asset recovery have no insight into its progress. We want to hear about it firsthand, not from news portals or foreign sources, said the deputy.
Bapi also highlighted an ongoing struggle between the old and new political elite, warning that many figures connected to the previous government still wield influence and seek to restore the Nazarbayev family’s control.
If we talk about Kazakhstan’s reform period, we must acknowledge that delays have occurred for various reasons. The problems did not disappear overnight after the January events. The 30-year legacy of the previous system left its mark. Of course, the problems have not disappeared; the old government’s underground struggle continues. We see individuals pushing their interests, often in ways that contradict the concept of 'New Kazakhstan.' In social networks, we see how they stir up the population, sometimes working in the interests of the old system, added Bapi.
Majilis Speaker Yerlan Koshanov also commented on the legacy of Old Kazakhstan, recalling how state governance and financial power were once entirely concentrated within the Nazarbayev family.
