Atyrau Region: Delays in Bank Reinforcement

After the spring flood, work to strengthen the banks has begun again in the Atyrau region. However, the pace leaves much to be desired, as confirmed by local authorities, reports an Orda.kz correspondent.
Akim Nurlan Nogayev initiated the construction of protective dams in the Makhambet district a few years ago.
In 2019, Japanese company Tokyo Rope representatives came to Atyrau and agreed to bolster the 4.5-km long bank. The regional Akimat announced this in an official press release, emphasizing the importance of attracting foreign investment.
However, the Japanese company later abandoned the project. It was transferred to another contractor — a Kazakhstani company.
Every year, the bank of the Ural River near the village of Makhambet is heavily washed away.
Over the past 10 years, the bank has shifted 4-10 meters to the west, and the spring flood again flooded a significant part of the Makhambet district.
Residential areas were not damaged, and after the water receded, work to fortify the banks continued. For this, gabion mesh filled with stones is used. The first layer is already ready, and the second is in the process of installation. Five layers are planned to be laid in total.
The Akimat of Atyrau Region reports that 16 billion tenge have been allocated for the project, and work has resumed after the spring flood.
In the village of Makhambet, the strengthening of the Ural River bank line over a distance of 4.5 km is proceeding slowly. In total, the project involves the installation of eight layers of gabions. The project is 55% complete, but during the next inspection, the contractor and technical supervision were given comments requiring an increase in the number of workers and equipment, the Akimat reported.
The contractor, however, assures that they will complete the project on time.
