A brief appeal has been filed against Zarema Musayeva's prison sentence, after she read the reasoned part of the Shali City Court’s decision that sentenced her to four years in a penal colony, Orda.kz reports, citing Caucasian Knot.
The prosecution had requested four years in prison in a case concerning the alleged disruption of the work of a penal colony. Prosecutors argued that Musayeva attacked a penal colony employee, though the defense noted that this accusation was based only on the testimony of the alleged victim and not confirmed by other witnesses.
Musayeva denied the charges in her final statement, asking not to be sent to the same facility where she previously served her first term, citing fears for her safety.
The Shali court sentenced Musayeva to 3 years and 11 months in prison, which, combined with one remaining month from her prior sentence, results in a total of four years. Initially, she had refused to appeal, saying she had no faith in the court system, according to human rights activists.
The original sentence in July 2023 was 5 years and 5 months, and was later reduced to 4 years and 9 months following an appeal.
Her lawyer, Alexander Savin, said that a brief appeal has now been filed and a detailed, reasoned appeal will follow after closer examination of the verdict.
Musayeva, the wife of former federal judge Saidi Yangulbaev, was forcibly taken from her apartment in Nizhny Novgorod by Chechen security forces on January 20, 2022. Following her detention, Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov accused the Yangulbaev family of organizing a terrorist network and declared that they would be sent “to prison or underground.”
Musayeva, who is also the mother of outspoken Chechen opposition activists, was initially accused of attacking a law enforcement officer and then fraud, charges human rights activists have called fabricated
