U.S. President Donald Trump may impose additional sanctions on Russia if a ceasefire with Ukraine is not reached by the end of April, Orda reports, citing an April 11 Axios report.
The warning follows Ukraine’s agreement to a 30-day ceasefire proposal during U.S.-led talks in Saudi Arabia on March 11. Russia rejected the deal unless it included limitations on Ukraine’s armed forces and a halt to foreign military assistance.
The breakdown in negotiations has reportedly fueled frustration in Washington.
Trump has adopted more forceful rhetoric, stating he is “pissed off” and “very angry” at Russian President Vladimir Putin over continued strikes and efforts to undermine Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
Although a partial truce covering energy infrastructure remains technically in place, both sides have accused each other of violations.
Meanwhile, Trump’s special envoy for the Middle East, Steve Witkoff, arrived in Russia on April 11 for talks with President Putin, according to Axios.
This would mark the third meeting between Putin and Witkoff, who has played a key role in Trump’s ceasefire push.
The visit comes one week after Putin’s envoy, Kirill Dmitriev, traveled to Washington and met with Witkoff and other U.S. officials, expressing “cautious optimism” about renewed diplomatic engagement.
Later on April 11, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov confirmed Witkoff’s arrival in Russia.
He noted that the Kremlin would announce separately whether a meeting with Putin is scheduled.
