The conversation between Qasym-Jomart Toqayev and Volodymyr Zelenskyy took place on the afternoon of August 10 at the initiative of the Ukrainian side, Orda.kz reports.
According to Aqorda, Toqayev emphasized the deep respect of the Kazakh people for Ukraine’s history, culture, and language, and reaffirmed Kazakhstan’s firm interest in establishing lasting peace in Ukraine based on the principles of international law.
He recalled that Kazakhstan has consistently advocated for a peaceful resolution to the conflict in line with the UN Charter, the inviolability of sovereign borders, and the territorial integrity of states.
In Toqayev’s view, given the current difficult situation, it is essential to approach conflict resolution with balance and rationality, ensuring the preservation and protection of Ukrainian statehood.
He stressed that all sides should follow the ancient wisdom that “a bad peace is better than a good quarrel.”
Acknowledging the complexity of territorial disputes, which often block progress toward peace or even a truce, the Kazakh President said the priority now must be safeguarding Ukrainian statehood with firm international security guarantees.
On August 15, Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin are scheduled to meet in Alaska.
