Poland’s government has approved its 2026 budget, allocating 200 billion zloty ($54.75 billion) for defense — equal to 4.8% of GDP, one of the highest levels among NATO members, according to an official statement, Orda.kz reports.

Prime Minister Donald Tusk said the decision was driven by the war on Poland’s eastern border:

“We know why we are doing this — the war is intensifying. We will continue to arm Poland and prepare for any surprises.”

NATO members agreed this summer to raise military spending to 5% of GDP by 2035 in response to Russia’s long-term threat. At present, Poland already leads the alliance at 4.1%, followed by Estonia, the U.S., Latvia, and Greece, which spend between 3% and 3.5%.

The move comes after President Donald Trump has repeatedly warned that the U.S. could withdraw from NATO unless European countries commit more resources to the alliance.
