A criminal case has been launched after the arrest of a 32-year-old National Security Committee (KNB) officer found with a large quantity of drugs, an Orda.kz correspondent reports.
The KNB confirmed that a pre-trial investigation is underway.
When contacted for clarification, the Atyrau Regional Police Department — whose drug enforcement unit detained the officer — cited procedural limits:
In accordance with Article 201 of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Kazakhstan, this matter requires approval from the prosecutor’s office. It should be noted that pre-trial investigation data is confidential. It may be made public only with the prosecutor’s permission, to the extent deemed possible, provided it does not conflict with the interests of the investigation or violate the rights and legitimate interests of others, the department said.
Earlier, it was reported that a KNB detective was detained in Atyrau with over a kilogram of a powdered substance found in his car and on his person.
A criminal case was initially opened under Article 296, Part 2 (“Illegal possession of drugs”), but the charge was later reclassified under Part 4, which applies to large quantities.
