Kazakhstan: Sentences Issued in Terrorism and Extremism Cases

Several court rulings related to religious radicalism and terrorism have recently come into effect in Kazakhstan, reports Orda.kz.

In Shymkent, a local resident was sentenced to 7.5 years in prison for promoting terrorism.

He called for violence against peaceful citizens while under the influence of extremist content from the internet,
 said the National Security Committee (KNB).

In another case, a court in Astana convicted a foreign national of promoting terrorist ideology and recruiting individuals into extremist groups. He was sentenced to eight years in prison.

According to the KNB, more than 60 people have been convicted for terrorism- and extremism-related offenses since the beginning of the year, including three foreign nationals.
