As Orda.kz learned, on September 4 at 21:30, ANPZ employees began shutting down a butene oligomerization unit due to a leak in the E-1604 reboiler. The malfunction that interrupted the operation of the butene oligomerization unit at the Atyrau Oil Refinery would be remedied the following day.
As a result, the burning of the plant's flares was visible in different parts of the city. As it became known, the plant's fuel network was directed to the flare system to prevent an accident.
Work is currently underway at the plant to thoroughly determine the causes of the incident. In addition, measures are being taken to resume production operations, the source said.
The Atyrau Region Department of Ecology will investigate the incident. A butene oligomerization unit in a refinery converts low-molecular-weight olefins, such as butenes, into longer-chain hydrocarbons called oligomers. These oligomers can produce various petroleum products, including gasoline and high-octane fuel components. A reboiler leak can lead to an incident, such as emissions of harmful substances or even an accident.
