Former Prosecutor In Qostanay Sentenced For Attempted Bribery

The Qostanay court has sentenced former prosecutor Murat Uspanov, finding him guilty of attempting to take a large bribe, Orda.kz reports.
According to the investigation, Uspanov demanded 20 million tenge from the head of the Rudny city construction department. In exchange, he promised to close a criminal case on embezzlement.
However, the official refused to pay and reported the extortion attempt to the National Security Committee (KNB). Shortly afterward, Uspanov was caught in a sting operation.
“To impose a sentence of four years and six months of imprisonment in a medium-security colony,” announced Judge Nurlan Bekishev.
Uspanov was also banned from holding public office and stripped of his title of Senior Counselor of Justice.
During the hearing, the former prosecutor admitted his guilt, and the case was reviewed under a shortened procedure.
The defense requested that he be fined instead, citing his family’s financial situation and the presence of his brother’s farm accounts. The court, however, rejected these arguments.
