Kazakhstan’s gas production has dropped sharply while domestic prices have spiked, Orda.kz reports, citing EnergyProm.

Between January and July 2025, the country extracted 14.8 billion cubic meters of natural gas, a decline of 10.3% compared to the same period last year.

To cover domestic needs and exports, Kazakhstan is increasingly importing gas. A year ago, local companies supplied almost three-quarters of demand, but now only a little over half. Imports in the first half of the year rose 2.3 times to 4.2 billion cubic meters, while exports also increased 2.6 times to 4.1 billion cubic meters. Gas was sent only to Russia and China, analysts wrote.

Domestic sales totaled 5.4 billion cubic meters, slightly more than last year.

Globally, Kazakhstan remains a relatively small player, ranking 25th in gas production in 2024. By comparison, the U.S. extracted over 1 trillion cubic meters, and Russia about 630 billion. Within the CIS, Kazakhstan lags behind Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, and Azerbaijan.

Meanwhile, household gas rates inside the country are rising rapidly. In August 2025 alone, prices jumped 21%, bringing the total increase since the start of the year to nearly 27%.

The steepest rise was seen in the Atyrau Region, where tariffs soared 70% year-on-year, with significant hikes also recorded in Aqtobe and Qyzylorda regions.
