A photo exhibition titled “Chronicle of Independence” has opened in Kazakhstan’s capital, dedicated to the country’s 30-year journey since gaining sovereignty in 1991. Given that the entire period is closely tied to the first president, Nursultan Nazarbayev, the exhibition inevitably reflects his legacy, Orda.kz reports.

The exhibition is housed in the Library of the First President in Astana, which also contains Nazarbayev’s former office. It highlights the key stages of Kazakhstan’s political, economic, and social development, laying the foundation for the modern state. The event was barely publicized, and few people are aware of it.

It remains open to the public and free to attend.

The project was organized with the support of the El Umiti corporate foundation and features the work of leading Kazakhstani photographers who documented pivotal moments in the country’s history — from the start of Nazarbayev’s presidency to major international efforts and domestic reforms.

The exhibition features rare archival photos spanning various moments in Kazakhstan’s history of independence. It will be presented in stages; for now, it features relatively recent images from the past decade — including Nazarbayev addressing the Japanese parliament, greeting cosmonaut Aidyn Aimbetov after his landing, lighting a New Year’s tree, and announcing his resignation in the spring of 2019.
