During a closed-door meeting with Donald Trump on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy requested the supply of long-range Tomahawk cruise missiles, Orda.kz reports, citing The Telegraph.
According to the Ukrainian leader, missiles with a range of thousands of kilometers “could convince Vladimir Putin to sit down at the negotiating table.”
In a subsequent interview with Axios, Zelenskyy confirmed that he had asked Washington for a “new weapons system,” which he said would pressure Moscow to consider peace talks — though he did not specify which system.
“We're working on it,” Trump reportedly told Zelenskyy in response.
The Telegraph recalls that previous requests for Tomahawks were rejected by Joe Biden, who considered the weapons too risky given their ability to strike Moscow and evade modern Russian air defenses.
Axios later reported that while Trump was open to discussing much of Kyiv’s weapons request, he refused to authorize the transfer of Tomahawks, even through NATO partners.
This was the only point where he expressed opposition.
Meanwhile, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio told European counterparts that Trump’s new position on Ukraine should be seen as “the most positive signal possible.” He added that the president is “very upset” with Putin for dismissing his attempts to broker an end to the war.
Following his talks with Zelenskyy, Trump said Ukraine — backed by NATO and the EU — could retake all occupied territories, citing the “economic problems” Ukraine was inflicting on Russia.
