Russian Oil Purchases: Trump Slaps Additional Tariffs on Indian Goods

U.S. President Donald Trump has signed an order introducing an additional 25% tariff on Indian goods, stacking on top of the 25% tariff already in force, Orda.kz reports, citing Reuters.
The latest tariffs are due to India’s continued purchases of Russian oil.
According to the document, the measure is tied to what the U.S. administration says is India’s role in financing Russia’s war in Ukraine through these oil imports. The tariffs will take effect 21 days after the signing — on August 27, 2025.
The order states that the Indian government “directly or indirectly imports Russian oil,” which poses a threat to U.S. national security.
Exceptions will be made only for goods subject to other trade measures or located in special customs zones. The document also notes that similar restrictions could be imposed on other countries purchasing Russian oil.
The new tariffs may have a limited overall impact, as exemptions, existing trade measures, and substitution options could blunt most of the economic effect.
