Putin Lectured Trump on Rurik and Khmelnytsky During Alaska Summit – Financial Times

Historical digressions were reportedly among the reasons the Anchorage summit ended early, Orda.kz reports.

The Financial Times, citing a senior intelligence source, has revealed new details about the meeting between Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump held in Alaska on August 15.

Trump reportedly offered to recognize Crimea as Russian territory and lift sanctions in exchange for a ceasefire in Ukraine. Putin rejected the proposal, insisting the war would end only if his conditions were met — including full control of the Donbas region, regime change in Kyiv, an end to Western arms deliveries, and a halt to NATO expansion.

Afterward, Putin allegedly launched into a lengthy historical monologue, referencing medieval rulers Rurik and Yaroslav the Wise, as well as Cossack leader Bohdan Khmelnytsky.

The tangent reportedly angered Trump, who raised his voice several times before abruptly ending the meeting and canceling the scheduled lunch.

Although Trump later described the encounter as a “great and successful day in Alaska,” the FT notes that it in fact marked a turning point in his stance toward the war in Ukraine. Soon after the talks, he approved a new military aid package for Kyiv.

Reports have since emerged of a follow-up phone call between Putin and Trump and plans for another meeting — this time in Budapest.
