Local authorities in Osh have dismantled a monument to Vladimir Lenin — the tallest of its kind in Kyrgyzstan — during the night of June 7, Orda.kz reports, citing Kaktus Media.

Erected in 1975, the statue stood in front of the city administration building and will be relocated to the “Meerim” city park.

In its place, a 95-meter flagpole bearing the national flag will be installed.

The statue had long been a subject of local debate — some residents supported its removal, while others viewed it as a historical landmark.

City officials emphasized that the decision is part of an effort to enhance the city's architectural appearance and should not be interpreted as a political statement. They also noted that similar relocations of Lenin monuments have taken place in parts of Russia.

However, the Communist Party of Kyrgyzstan has demanded a review of the mayor’s actions. Party leader Iskhak Masaliyev called the removal "a disgrace" and accused officials of prioritizing commercial interests over cultural heritage.

Earlier this year, Vice Speaker Nurbek Sydygaliev proposed removing the Lenin monument from Old Square in Bishkek, suggesting it be replaced with a statue of Turdakun Usubaliyev, the former First Secretary of the Communist Party of the Kyrgyz SSR.
