Joint archaeological excavations are set to begin on May 20,  Orda.kz reports, citing the Margulan Institute of Archaeology.

The research will focus on the Copper Age settlement of Krasny Yar I, located in the Aqmola region. The project brings together Kazakhstan's archaeologists and researchers from the University of Arkansas.

The Copper Age — also known as the Eneolithic — spanned roughly from 5,500 to 3,500 years ago. The excavation aims to uncover how people lived in what is now Northern Kazakhstan during that period.

It is expected that the materials obtained will shed light on previously unexplored aspects of economic life and cultural processes during the Eneolithic, the institute stated.

The recovered artifacts will undergo various forms of analysis, including isotope testing to more precisely determine their age and paleogenomic studies, which examine ancient DNA.
