EU Urges Georgia to Prevent Re-Export of Sanctioned Goods to Russia

The European Union has reminded Georgia of its obligation to prevent the re-export of EU-sanctioned goods to Russia, Orda.kz reports, citing 1tv.ge.
The message came in a letter from David O’Sullivan, the EU Special Representative for Sanctions, addressed to the Georgian government and published by the country’s Foreign Ministry.
O’Sullivan noted that Brussels had earlier provided Georgia with a list of 50 customs codes covering dual-use goods and advanced technologies found in Russian military systems or used in their production. He urged Tbilisi to ban any re-export of these items to Russia, warning that Georgia could otherwise become an alternative route for illicit trade.
While stressing that Georgia is not a major re-exporter, the EU envoy commended the authorities for their cooperation and “steps taken to prevent circumvention of EU sanctions.”
Incidentally, in 2024, Russia lifted its flight ban on Georgia and reintroduced visa-free travel for Georgian citizens, allowing stays of up to 90 days — and later extended the rule to include work and study visits, according to the The Caucasian Knot.
Additionally, Russia previously announced it would not comply with a European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) ruling ordering it to pay over €253 million to Georgia for human rights violations linked to the aftermath of the 2008 war.
