Criminal Case Launched Over Personal Data Leak Affecting 16 Million Kazakhstanis

A criminal case has been opened in connection with the massive leak of personal data belonging to 16 million Kazakhstanis, Deputy Prosecutor General Galymzhan Koigeldiyev announced, Orda.kz reports.
According to Koigeldiyev, the order to initiate proceedings came from the Prosecutor General.
A criminal case has already been registered and transferred to the Ministry of Internal Affairs for investigation. As you understand, I cannot provide further details at this stage,he said.
Earlier, an archive containing personal data from 2022 to 2024 surfaced online. The leak includes phone numbers, home addresses, place-of-residence information, and other sensitive details.
The Ministry of Digital Development confirmed that it is reviewing the circumstances of the breach. The Information Security Committee, along with law enforcement and intelligence agencies, is conducting an investigation.
Preliminary findings suggest that the data originated from non-governmental sources.
Following the launch of a new online tool allowing users to check potential sources of personal data leaks, many in Kazakhstan began sharing their results online. Frequently mentioned sources include major Russian companies such as Yandex and Sportmaster.
