Early this morning, an interdepartmental investigative task force detained the former deputy head of the Almaty Police Department for Combating Drug Crime (UDC), retired lieutenant colonel Askar Dzhetegenov, Orda.kz reports.
Our sources say after the new PD head's arrival, the department boosted monitoring of employees with dubious connections. One was Dzheteghenov, engaged in combating drug trafficking.
There was no direct evidence of his involvement in protecting drug dealers, but there were persistent rumors about it.
Last year, Dzheteghenov failed an assessment. According to our sources, he was dismissed from the police with cause.
The Police Department officially reported the following:
The said employee was dismissed from the internal affairs agencies in October of this year. He was dismissed following an unscheduled assessment, during which he was found to be unsuitable for the position he held
The Ministry of Internal Affairs systematically removes dishonest employees, ensuring transparency and high service standards.
After his dismissal, the interdepartmental investigative and operational group looked into all the previous talk about certain persons in the police and recorded the rapid growth of drug labs.
Monitoring and 'leading' such an experienced operative who has worked in law enforcement agencies for about 20 years is not an easy task. He knows very well how operational investigative activities, surveillance, and test purchases are conducted, says our source.
The interdepartmental group's operation yielded results. Today, December 10, at six a.m., officers detained the suspect. The Prosecutor General's Office confirmed the detention.
