Kazakhstan Temir Joly will purchase new locomotives from the American company Wabtec for 405 million dollars, Orda.kz reports, citing Business Wire.
Wabtec notes that the new locomotives will help update KTZ's aging fleet.
KTZ serves as a critical link for the transportation of freight between China and the West. These Evolution Series locomotives will provide the efficiency, reliability, and operational savings to effectively support the growing demand on the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route, commented Gokhan Bayhan, Wabtec's Senior Regional Vice President for Operations in the CIS, Europe, Middle East, and Africa.
The new locomotives are well suited to extreme weather conditions and are adapted to mountainous terrain. They can operate longer, potentially strengthening Kazakhstan's role as a transport hub.
Although the locomotives will be produced by an American company using its technologies, they will be assembled in Kazakhstan at the JSC Lokomotiv Kurastyru Zauyty plant in Astana.
The plant complies with all international quality standards, such as MC ISO 9001–2015. The company employs more than 700 people, Wabtec reports.
Deliveries of new locomotives will begin in 2025. They will replenish the KTZ fleet, which includes 451 Evolution series locomotives.
In February 2024, it was reported that KTZ's locomotive fleet was planned to be significantly updated. Wabtec now fully controls JSC Lokomotiv Qurastyru Zauyty.
Wabtec previously owned half of the shares in parity with the Russian JSC Transmashholding.
Transmashholding left Kazakhstan due to sanctions, allowing the American company to buy out its enterprise share fully. In September 2022, KTZ signed a memorandum of understanding with Wabtec.
The Americans may face competition in the Kazakh market. The Astana-registered Qamqor Lokomotiv, a company with ties to Russia, also operates in this sector. It announced plans to build a large plant in the Aqmola region in August.
