Kazakhstan has begun using a new conscription screening method to identify recruits at risk of suicide in advance, Orda.kz reports.
The PSY-RISK system was discussed at a special meeting at the National Military-Patriotic Center. It is being implemented to prevent young people with psychological instability from entering military service.
The project was developed by military psychologists at the Ministry of Defense and was already tested in the spring of 2025.
More than 470 young people with signs of suicidal tendencies were identified. All of them were either exempted from service or sent for additional examination,
the defense ministry said of the results.
The system operates in several stages: an initial psychological test, a follow-up examination, and, if necessary, a psychiatric evaluation. The key goal is to keep those who are psychologically unprepared from serving.
Orda.kz has covered tragic incidents in the Kazakh military, including the case of Daniyar Temirgali, who ended up in a psychiatric hospital just months after joining the army, the suicide of a soldier in Zaysan, and the scandal involving Ulan Musayev, who was left disabled after a gunshot wound at a military college.
