U.S. President Extends Sanctions Against Russia for One More Year

U.S. President Donald Trump has signed an executive order extending for one year the package of sanctions against Russia initially introduced by his predecessor, Joe Biden, Orda.kz reports, citing documents published in the U.S. Federal Register.
The extension concerns Executive Order 14024, issued on April 15, 2021, which the Biden administration had previously expanded and renewed multiple times.
Specified harmful foreign activities of the Government of the Russian Federation — in particular, efforts to undermine the conduct of free and fair democratic elections and democratic institutions in the United States and its allies and partners; to engage in and facilitate malicious cyber-enabled activities against the United States and its allies and partners; to foster and use transnational corruption to influence foreign governments; to pursue extraterritorial activities targeting dissidents or journalists; to undermine security in countries and regions important to United States national security; and to violate well-established principles of international law, including respect for the territorial integrity of states—continue to pose an unusual and extraordinary threat to the national security, foreign policy, and economy of the United States, the document reads.
The order extends the freezing of Russian assets, sanctions, and secondary restrictions on foreign financial institutions cooperating with Russia’s defense-industrial sector.
In February 2025, Trump had also extended a separate set of sanctions targeting Russia. At the time, Reuters reported that the U.S. administration was developing a plan to ease some of the restrictions.
However, in March, the U.S. President warned that additional sanctions could be introduced if Russia did not agree to a ceasefire in Ukraine.
