In August, a court sentenced five activists opposing the construction of a nuclear power plant to four years of restricted freedom. Their sentences have now been reduced by one and a half years, Orda.kz reports.

Almaty activist Abzal Dostiyar announced on Facebook that the terms for Nurlan Zhaulibayev, Zhanat Kazakbay, Fazylzhan Syzdykov, Nurlan Temirgaliyev, and Aidar Mubarakov were shortened to two years and six months following an appeal.

However, their conviction for attempting to organize unrest remains in place.

The activists were detained in September 2024 and remained in custody until sentencing. The court counted each day in detention as two days served, meaning their remaining sentence of restricted freedom should expire soon.

The five were accused of planning to hold a protest on the day of the referendum on the nuclear power plant’s construction.

Prosecutors had requested five-year prison terms, but the court initially opted for a lighter sentence.
