Rare Kulans Captured on Camera in Altyn-Emel National Park

Camera traps in Altyn-Emel National Park have recorded rare kulans (Equus hemionus), a species listed in Kazakhstan’s Red Book, Orda.kz reports.
The footage shows several animals drinking from a water source without fear and displaying curiosity toward the camera, indicating successful adaptation to their natural environment.
Kulans were once widespread across Kazakhstan’s steppe and semi-desert zones. However, by the early 20th century, overhunting and land development had drastically reduced their habitat, pushing the species to the brink of extinction.
Today, kulans are being actively relocated from Altyn-Emel to other protected areas, including the Altyn Dala and Ile-Balkhash reserves, as well as the Suzak district. These conservation measures have contributed to the gradual recovery of the species’ population.
Altyn-Emel National Park remains one of the country’s key centers for the preservation of rare and endangered wildlife. The park provides conditions for the protection and natural reproduction of many unique species, including the kulan.
Earlier, a rare brown bear was also captured on camera in the mountains near Almaty.
