What Did Nursultan Nazarbayev Lose in 2023?
After the events of "Bloody January", the former president of Kazakhstan regularly lost titles and positions. Orda.kz has compiled a short list of how 2023 ended for Nursultan Nazarbayev.
In January last year, Kazakhstan's parliament stripped Nazarbayev of the Elbasy status. Immediately after that, the Senate announced that the former president would no longer be an honorary senator of Kazakhstan. This title would later be abolished altogether.
At the end of May, insulting the former president ceased to be a criminal offense. Three years in prison for such an offense could have been handed down in the past. In the Criminal Code, these articles were 373 and 374.
In June, the head of the Ministry of Finance, Yerulan Zhamaubayev, said that Nazarbayev's office and library would be shuttered. This decision came to be even though 5.6 billion tenge was allocated from the republican budget for the office's maintenance for a period of three years (2023-2025). As it turned out, a presidential center was simply established in their place.
On June 29, following the Senate deputies' passing of yet another law, Nazarbayev lost the status of the Board of Trustees's head of educational institutions named after him: Nazarbayev Intellectual Schools and Nazarbayev University. Qasym-Jomart Toqayev is currently in control of this position's authority.
It should be noted that the private "Nazarbayev Foundation", named after the first president, was founded by Nursultan Nazarbayev.
